MARTINSBURG —Anne Barth quickly adjusted from the role of advisor to that of candidate.
Barth stood amid a group of cheering supporters when she announced her congressional campaign to residents of the Eastern Panhandle last December.
“My name is Anne Barth, and I am running for Congress,” the former aide of Sen. Robert C. Byrd, D-W.Va. said during the speech.
Barth, 50, served as Byrd’s state director for more than two decades. She decided to seek office herself and filed to run for West Virginia’s Second Congressional District. Since then, she has stepped down from her post with his office, though she said she is taking with her a series of valuable lessons.
“He taught me that with the courage of your convictions and a lot of elbow grease, a person can make a difference,” she said.
Over the years, Barth said she has helped to address the problems of thousands of West Virginians who sought help from Byrd’s office. These residents were concerned about their jobs, their mortgages, and the future.
