MARTINSBURG — Democratic candidates for the 2nd Congressional District called for quick withdrawal from Iraq, universal health care and better policies for West Virginians this week during a forum at Martinsburg High School.
Candidates Anne Barth, Thornton Cooper and Richie Robb will face each other at the polls during the May 13 primary election, and the winner of that race will challenge incumbent U.S. Rep. Shelley Moore Capito, R-W.Va.
The Democratic candidates not only spoke about how they think Capito has been too close to President Bush’s administration during the past eight years, they also presented their ideas about how to do a better job representing the 2nd Congressional District’s constituents.
“Like most West Virginians, I believe it’s time for a change,” Barth said, adding that one of the biggest changes she would like to see includes getting the United States military out of Iraq.
She said too many bridges, roads and schools are being built in Iraq, and the only thing Americans are getting is the bill.
