MARTINSBURG — Anne Barth stood amid a group of cheering supporters Friday to announce her congressional campaign to residents of the Eastern Panhandle.

“My name is Anne Barth, and I am running for Congress,” the former aide of Sen. Robert C. Byrd, D-W.Va., said during a speech which took place shortly after noon that day.

Barth, 50, served as Byrd's state director for more than two decades. Last Saturday, she decided to seek office herself and filed papers to run for West Virginia 's 2nd Congressional District. Since then, she has stepped down from her post with his office, though she said she is taking with her a series of valuable lessons.

“He taught me that with the courage of your convictions and a lot of elbow grease, a person can make a difference,” she said.
