Capito vs. Barth: How it shapes up
Maria Lorensen
If women throughout the country are excited about the fact that a woman is running for president, women throughout West Virginia should be very excited about the fact that two women are running for Congress in the 2nd Congressional District.
Incumbent Republican Shelley Moore Capito has held the seat since 2000. She was in Martinsburg on Thursday to hand out an award to Schonstedt Instrument Co. in Jefferson County and to address the Martinsburg Rotary Club.
Not uncoincidentally, Capito's newfound opponent, Anne Barth, a longtime assistant to U.S. Sen. Robert C. Byrd, D, W.Va., was in Martinsburg and Shepherdstown on Friday to announce locally that she was running for the seat. Barth entered the race at the 11th hour after Democratic state Sen. John Unger announced last week on the day that the filing period ended that he wouldn't run.
As my colleague Dan Page, editor and publisher of the State Journal, said this week, this shapes up to be the race of the year in West Virginia.
